ARTIST ADVOCACY FOUNDATION

FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW, DETROIT’S GEM THEATER WILL BE THE SITE OF A FABULOUS FUNDRAISER FOR THE ARTIST ADVOCACY FOUNDATION (AAF), A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT LOOKS TO SUPPORT, PRODUCE AND PROMOTE ARTISTS, EVENTS AND PROGRAMS THAT ASPIRE TO INSPIRE; SPECIFICALLY, ONES THAT MAY NOT HAVE THE FUNDS TO CARRY OUT THEIR WORK WITHOUT FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. THIS YEAR’S PROGRAM INCLUDES A HIGHLY ENTERTAINING SLIDE SHOW BY RENOWNED MUSIC PHOTOGRAPHER, HENRY DILTZ, WHOSE WORK INCLUDES SUCH CLASSIC ALBUM COVERS AS: CROSBY, STILLS & NASH (ON THE COUCH,) JAMES TAYLOR (SWEET BABY JAMES,) THE DOORS (MORRISON HOTEL), THE EAGLES (DESPERADO, ON THE BORDER), STEPHEN STILLS (IN THE SNOW,) JACKSON BROWNE, DAN FOGELBERG, AMERICA, LILY TOMLIN, RICHARD PRYOR, AND HUNDREDS OTHERS; MAGAZINE COVERS SUCH AS LIFE (PAUL & LINDA MCCARTNEY) AND ROLLING STONE (MICHAEL JACKSON, TRUMAN CAPOTE); AND THOUSANDS OF OTHER ICONIC IMAGES OF JIMI HENDRIX, JANIS JOPLIN, THE ROLLING STONES, NEIL YOUNG, BOB DYLAN, JONI MITCHELL, LINDA RONSTADT, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, GARTH BROOKS, AND MANY, MANY MORE. YOU’LL HEAR HEARTWARMING AND HUMOROUS BEHIND-THE-SCENES TALES FROM THE MAN WHO WAS ON-STAGE PHOTOGRAPHER AT WOODSTOCK, CONCERT FOR BANGLADESH, MONTEREY POP FESTIVAL, MIAMI POP FESTIVAL, AND OTHER HISTORIC EVENTS. DILTZ ALSO SERVED AS NARRATOR AND CONTRIBUTOR OF THE CNN SERIES, “THE SIXTIES,” AND THE DOCUMENTARY FILM, “THE HISTORY OF THE EAGLES.” A LIMITED NUMBER OF CLASSIC ROCK PRINTS WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR SALE AT THE EVENT AT A GREATLY REDUCED RATE TO HELP RAISE MONEY FOR AAF, AND DILTZ WILL BE DELIGHTED TO SIGN THEM AND TO CHAT. ALSO ON THE BILL IS DETROIT NATIVE, MICHAEL ON FIRE. WITH POWERFUL LYRICS THAT COMBINE SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSCIOUSNESS, MYSTICISM AND OLD-FASHIONED STORYTELLING, AND A PERFORMANCE STYLE THAT SCREAMS INTENSITY, SINCERITY AND EMOTION, MOF EXEMPLIFIES THE ARTIST ADVOCACY MISSION: WE ASPIRE TO INSPIRE. FROM HIS BEGINNING AS A SONGWRITER AND ARTIST SIGNED BY DON DAVIS TO GROOVESVILLE MUSIC WORKING OUT OF DETROIT’S FAMED UNITED SOUND STUDIOS, TO HIS EARLIEST RECORDINGS WITH THE MUSCLE SHOALS RHYTHM SECTION (“THE SWAMPERS,”) TO HIS MUSICAL EXPLORATIONS WITH HIS PROGRESSIVE JAZZ GROUP PRISMATIC, TO HIS TIME IN L.A. AND NASHVILLE AND THE YEARS OF NON-STOP TOURING THROUGH EVERY NOOK AND CRANNY OF THE COUNTRY, AND RIGHT ON THROUGH TO HIS LATEST WORKS (SIX ALBUMS IN THE LAST EIGHT YEARS,) MOF HAS BEEN RELENTLESS IN HIS COMMITMENT TO CREATIVE EXPRESSION AND MUSICAL PERFORMANCE. HE IS THAT RARE BREED THAT HAS LIVED HIS ENTIRE LIFE UNCOMPROMISINGLY AS A FULL-TIME ARTIST, PLAYING ALL ORIGINAL MUSIC. BAM MAGAZINE USED DILTZ TO SHOOT PHOTOS FOR A COVER STORY IT WAS RAN ON MOF, AND ONE OF THE SHOTS FROM THAT SESSION BECAME THE COVER OF HIS FIRST ALBUM, PRE-DAWN CHRONICLES, WHICH WAS CO-PRODUCED BY JOE VITALE (JOE WALSH, CSN, THE EAGLES) AND STEPHEN STILLS (WHO ALSO RECORDED TWO MOF SONGS.) THE TWO HAVE SINCE CROSSED PATHS SEVERAL TIMES AT FESTIVALS AND CONCERTS, AND DILTZ, WHO IS THE CO-FOUNDER OF THE MODERN FOLK QUARTET, HAS PERFORMED WITH MOF ON STAGE PLAYING BANJO. THOUGH AAF HAS ITS HOME OFFICE IN CALIFORNIA, TWO OF ITS BOARDMEMBERS, INCLUDING DAVID KATZ (VP AT DETROIT MEDICAL CENTER) AND PLYMOUTH CITY COUNCILMEMBER COLLEEN POBUR, BOTH LIVE IN THE DETROIT METROPOLITAN AREA. IN ADDITION, AAF EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, RON COLONE, AND ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, CAROLE ANN COLONE, WERE BOTH BORN AND RAISED IN DETROIT. SHE GRADUATED FROM HENRY FORD HIGH SCHOOL AND HE WAS AT LIVONIA STEVENSON. “DETROIT HOLDS A VERY DEAR PLACE IN OUR HEARTS,” SAID CAROLE ANN. “IT HAS GIVEN US THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE HARD-WORK ETHIC, AND THE PLIGHT OF WORKING MEN AND WOMEN. WE TRY TO BRING THAT TO OUR WORK WITH AAF, TO ADVOCATE ON BEHALF OF WORKING ARTISTS WHO INSPIRE US NOT ONLY THROUGH THEIR CREATIONS BUT THROUGH THEIR PERSEVERANCE AND INTESTINAL FORTITUDE.” WORKING QUIETLY AND BEHIND THE SCENES, AAF HAS HELPED DOZENS OF ARTISTS AROUND THE COUNTRY PURSUE THEIR ARTISTIC ENDEAVORS AND FULFILL THEIR UNIQUE ROLE AND FUNCTION IN SOCIETY. IN ADDITION TO THE MANY PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES AAF HAS MADE POSSIBLE, THEY HAVE PROVIDED DIRECT FUNDING THAT HAS HELPED PAY FOR: EQUIPMENT, SUPPLIES AND MATERIALS, PERFORMANCE FEES, PROMOTIONAL COSTS, REPAIRS, MEDICAL AND DENTAL BILLS, RENTAL FEES, PROFESSIONAL SERVICES, AND TOUR SUPPORT. PERHAPS EVEN MORE IMPORTANTLY, THEY HAVE BEEN STEADFAST IN THEIR EFFORTS TO EDUCATE PEOPLE AS TO THE BENEFITS OF ART AND THE IMPORTANCE OF FUNDING ARTISTS. THROUGHOUT HISTORY, ART HAS BEEN MADE POSSIBLE AND AVAILABLE THROUGH PATRONAGE AND PHILANTHROPY. AAF LOOKS TO CARRY ON AND FURTHER INSTIGATE THIS NOBLE TRADITION. “WE ARE STRIVING TO INCREASE THE SCOPE OF OUR GOOD WORKS, AND BENEFIT ARTISTS AND COMMUNITIES IN EVER MORE IMPACTFUL WAYS, AND WE INVITE YOU TO JOIN US IN THIS LOFTY ENDEAVOR,” SAID RON COLONE.
